Iran Eases Foreign Investment Rules to Simplify Currency Conversion

TEHRAN- Iran has revised unnecessary regulations governing foreign investment, allowing foreign investors to convert foreign currency brought into the country into Iranian rials through a mutually agreed process, a senior Economy Ministry official said.

Morteza Zamanian, deputy minister for economic policy and strategic management at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, said the changes were introduced to address investor concerns and facilitate the inflow of foreign capital into the country.

Speaking to Shada, the ministry’s news outlet, Zamanian explained that one of the main obstacles had been a requirement for foreign investors bringing currency into Iran to follow a procedure similar to the foreign-exchange repatriation rules imposed on exporters.

He said the requirement had caused dissatisfaction because the funds involved originated abroad and were supplied directly by foreign investors, making the application of the same procedures inappropriate.

Following a review conducted in cooperation with the Iran Investment Organization and the Deregulation Board, many redundant rules and requirements were removed, Zamanian said. Under the revised procedures, foreign investors can now convert the foreign currency they bring into Iran into rials through an agreed mechanism.

He stressed that the changes had eliminated barriers that had previously complicated the investment process and frustrated foreign investors.

Zamanian said the reform was among a series of measures adopted through coordination between the Economy Ministry’s economic policy deputyship and the Iran Investment Organization, with the broader objective of streamlining investment procedures and making it easier for foreign capital to enter the country.
