Iran Economy Minister Arrives in India for BRICS Economic Diplomacy

Iranian Economy Minister Seyyed Ali Madanizadeh has arrived in Mumbai to attend a meeting of BRICS finance ministers, continuing Tehran’s efforts to expand economic ties with member states of the bloc.

Madanizadeh was received by Saeed-Reza Mosayeb Motlagh, Consul General in Mumbai, following the conclusion of his economic talks and consultations in Moscow.

During his visit to India, Madanizadeh is scheduled to participate in the BRICS finance ministers’ meeting and hold bilateral talks with Indian economic officials, as well as finance ministers and other senior economic officials from BRICS member states.

The visit is part of the Iranian government’s broader push to strengthen regional economic diplomacy and diversify the country’s trade and investment partners.

The BRICS finance ministers’ meeting is scheduled to take place in Mumbai on September 10-11, followed by the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13.

Madanizadeh has described his trips to Russia and India as part of a single, coordinated track of Iran’s economic diplomacy. Before departing for Moscow, he said the Russia visit was focused on bilateral economic consultations, following up on memoranda of understanding and joint agreements, and expanding financial, trade and transit cooperation.

The India visit, he said, is aimed at leveraging BRICS mechanisms to expand economic and financial cooperation and engage with other members of the grouping.

Madanizadeh has also described Iran’s membership in BRICS as an important opportunity to deepen economic and financial cooperation. Among the issues expected to receive attention at the meetings are development finance, banking and financial cooperation, trade and investment facilitation, strategic commodities and energy markets, joint investment funds, and bilateral and multilateral currency arrangements.

Iran joined BRICS in January 2024, alongside Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, as part of the group’s expansion. Tehran has sought to use its membership to broaden economic ties with emerging-market economies and strengthen alternative channels for trade, investment and financial cooperation.
