Iran, Pakistan Seek to Streamline Cross-Border Trade and Transit

Iranian Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Seyyed Ali Madanizadeh and Pakistani Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan have discussed ways to expand bilateral trade and economic ties, facilitate cross-border freight movements, and remove transit bottlenecks along their shared border.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 42nd Session of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC) in Istanbul.

According to SHADA, Madanizadeh underscored the need to deepen economic and trade cooperation between the two neighboring countries, highlighting smoother freight transportation and transit procedures as key priorities.

The two ministers reviewed existing opportunities to expand bilateral trade and stressed the importance of practical measures to address obstacles affecting the movement of goods between Iran and Pakistan.

Border bottlenecks and customs coordination

Addressing difficulties faced by trucks at the Rimdan border crossing, making more effective use of the Mirjaveh crossing and improving the flow of freight between the two countries were among the key issues discussed.

The two sides also emphasized the need to strengthen border infrastructure and expand the capacity of free trade zones and border regions to facilitate commerce and increase bilateral trade.

Improving coordination between border customs authorities and enhancing operational procedures at entry and exit points also featured prominently in the discussions.

Both ministers stressed that closer customs cooperation and more efficient clearance procedures could reduce the time and costs associated with customs clearance and freight transportation, helping streamline bilateral trade.

The officials also highlighted the potential to increase trade volumes, particularly in agricultural products, foodstuffs and other goods required by both countries.

Expanding economic cooperation in border regions was also identified as an important means of strengthening bilateral economic ties, creating employment opportunities, stimulating local business activity and supporting security and sustainable development in border communities.

The meeting concluded with both sides emphasizing the importance of continued consultations and follow-up on the issues discussed, with a view to translating their understandings into practical measures and further strengthening economic, trade and transit cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.
